M1906 Ball Cartridge
The M1906 Ball cartridge had a 150 grain full-metal jacket bullet. The jacket was made of cupro-nickel. In the early days of 1908 it became obvious that the bullet was not secured enough in the case and could be pulled off by hand. Several tests wth different crimps to hold the bullet more securely were made.

Left: two different crimps tried in 1908 to secure the bullet.
Both cartridges, headstamp: FA 05 08
Also a cannelure, which underwent several chages was applied to the bullet. The final version of the M1906 cartridge had no additional crimp below the case mouth but the bullet had a double-sided knuled cannelure.

From left to right:
1) early smooth bullet jacket
2) small knurles added to jacket
3) one-sided knurled cannelure
4) double.-sided knurled cannelure
In the coming years, a lot of different bullet variations were tested. These however will be discussed in the chapter experimental ball ammunition.
